Homeopathy is a holistic health practice treating the person as a whole when diagnosing the problem, rather than taking the illness out of its personal context and treating it in isolation.
In the fifth century BC Hippocrates (c470-400 BC), the ‘Father of medicine’, wrote that there are two methods of healing: by ‘contraries’ and by ‘similars’.
Homeopathy comes from the Greek words ‘homois’ meaning ‘similar’ and ‘pathos’ meaning ‘suffering’. This literal translation indicates the fundamental aspect of homeopathy: curing the sick by the application of the Law of Similars.
It works on the principle ‘similar similibus curentur’ which means that what will cause, can also cure. Something causing an imbalance in the body can be used to restore balance. Hence, a substance that will cause a disease in a healthy person when given in large doses, will also cure a sick person suffering from similar symptoms when treated by homoeopathically prepared doses of the same substance.
Homeopathy is the art and science of healing by safe, gentle, natural methods. It was bought to life and developed by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, in the late eighteenth century.
Homeopathy, as has been said before, is holistic and treats the whole person and not just the symptoms, believing that symptoms are the body’s own attempts at healing itself. Any suppression of these symptoms will drive the disease further in to the body and will manifest itself in other, more harmful, ways.
During the initial consultation, which is quite lengthy, usually about one hour, and which is also thorough and totally confidential, the homeopath will carefully question the patient. This is done in order to build up and multi-dimensional picture to match one of the drug pictures and, hence, find the correct remedy for that person. Several people all suffering with the same natural disease may receive completely different homeopathic medicines because each person is unique and his or her unique set of conditions, be they mental, emotional, physical or symptomatic, are taken into account in choosing the appropriate remedy.
Most people respond well to homeopathic treatments, though some might take longer than others. It is advisable not to stop or reduce the dosage of medication already being taken without consultation of your GP, who prescribed them.
Homeopathic medicines have been proved, over two hundred years, to be safe and effective in treating ailments serious and minor, acute and chronic, physical and emotional. Homeopathy also plays an important role in preventing disease. Homeopathic drugs are natural cures that have no side effects when prescribed correctly and are safe, even for babies, children and pregnant women.
